Sheck's House Corporation is named in honor of our Grandfather and Washington, DC native Corporal Sheck L. Wright. He served in the US Army, and fought in the Korean War from September 20, 1950, to June 19, 1952. Sheck and his fellow soldier's sacrifice, and bravery gave their lives for the American people. Thank you to the veterans who have served our country with honor and dignity. We appreciate your dedication and commitment and for protecting us every single day, now it's time for us to protect you.
Programs & Services
HOUSING
Sheck’s House is a single-room occupancy (SRO) residence facility for homeless veterans. Residents share common spaces including a living room, business center, dining areas, kitchen, and 4 bathrooms. We provide 24- hour security surveillance with an electronic front door. Through our 9 single-room facility, our veterans will receive 3 prepared meals a day. Our tenants are veterans from all branches of the military over the age of 18. Referrals are accepted from social workers, case managers at emergency shelters, and transitional housing programs.
EMPLOYMENT
We have joined forces with corporations, veteran-owned, and small businesses to provide job placement, job search assistance, employment resources, and training opportunities for our veterans to successfully transition back into the workforce, and land a successful career.
SUICIDE PREVENTION
Since 9/11, four times as many U.S. service members and veterans have died by suicide than have been killed in combat. Through our on-site therapy and peer-to-peer mentoring groups, our tenants will find the hands-on support they need anytime day or night. Through classes, daily activities, and social gatherings Sheck's House will offer a network of support.
FINANCIAL LITERACY
Financial literacy combines financial, credit, and debt management knowledge that is necessary to make financially responsible decisions. Our tenants will receive one on one counseling with bankers, mortgage lenders, and creditors in an effort to put them on the right financial course to sustain their everyday lives.
TRANSPORTATION
Transportation is an important social determinant of health. The availability of reliable transportation impacts a person's ability to access appropriate and well-coordinated healthcare and VA visit. We will assure our vets are provided rides to and from VA hospital and VA appointments on a daily basis.
